On May 2, 2004, the Cal Lightweights competed at the WIRA championships. The varsity men took second to UC Davis in the lightweight eight. Then varsity men also stepped up and competed in the open varsity eight event where they raced in the petite final. The varsity women took second behind San Diego State in the lightweight eight race.
Both the novice men and women raced in open weight races because there was not a lightweight eight race for novices. The novice men raced in the grand final where they finished sixth place out of twelve boats. In the men’s novice lightweight four event, the novice men finished first with an eight second lead over second place.
The novice women raced in the petite final for the novice women’s open eight event where they took second by only a tenth of a second behind UC Irvine. This placed the novice women in eight place overall out of eighteen boats. The novice lightweight four finished off in third place behind UC Santa Barbara and Sacramento State.
