Alumni Day 2005 Recap

2005 Alumni Day Slideshow!

Despite a tropical storm earlier in the morning, the March 19th Alumni Day went very well. Together with their friends and family, over thirty alumni helped cement this as an annual tradition. Though turnout was not expected to match that of the first annual event last year, attendance increased not only from the post 2000 era but also from the 1970s.

The weather cleared up just in time for the "1990s Decade" boat to win the 1000 meter Alumni Challenge Cup. Coming in second and third were the "2000 Decade" boat and the "1970s-1980s Decades" boat, respectively.

Almost $5000 was raised to send the team to the IRA championships this year. The top donor boat medals were given to the “1970s-1980s Decades” boat for raising $1540. As donations are still coming in from many who could not attend the total amount is expected to reach $6000.

“We had a great time… at the Cal Lightweight reunion. Lots of laughs, catching up, and lies... We even won the prize for donating the most $ to the crew (and for having the highest average weight too -- 184, or something like that).”
--Steve Azevedo

“Despite the rain, wind, riptide and a few near-crabs, the 70-80's boat managed our way across the finish line. Our staggered start was almost none-existent this year---having the 90's boat catch us before we'd even finished our start wasn't much fun… We met many young, energetic, and inspiring folks… I am grateful to be part of our team of alums and am certain these efforts will bear fruit for the program.

The proud tradition of California Lightweight Crew is built on the shoulders of countless individuals throughout the years. From it's roots in 1971 and to the current day, these individuals work tirelessly for athletic excellence, for program survival, for that bond only a group of nine rowers can experience. Their legacy is the program. Unfortunately, however, not enough consistent effort has been put into maintaining the link between the program and its alumni. The few records that exists are incomplete and outdated. Efforts are underway to re-establish, and in a lot of cases to create, a consistent relationship between the team and the alumni. The Alumni section of the page is designed to allow alumni easy access to information about upcoming alumni events, ways in which alums can help the crew. We'd love to hear from you.
